Severe Morning Sickness: Is It Typical Pregnancy Nausea or Hyperemesis Gravidarum?

Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause nausea and vomiting. Mild symptoms that still allow normal eating and drinking are usually described as morning sickness. If vomiting persists, prevents normal eating and drinking, or significantly disrupts daily life, seek prompt medical assessment for hyperemesis gravidarum (HG).

Dr. Fenglin Chen proposes that, in some patients, these symptoms may be associated with an allergic response to human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). He uses this hypothesis to guide classification and treatment. These patients may also experience excessive salivation, insomnia, depressive symptoms and abnormal thyroid function.

According to Dr. Chen, he has accumulated relevant treatment experience involving approximately 3,000 cases and uses an individualized approach he describes as “hCG desensitization.” The formulation has not been publicly disclosed for reasons including patent protection. Its effectiveness and scope of use still need to be explained with supporting clinical data.
